A thermocouple is a temperature sensing devise consisting of two dissimilar metals joined together at the sensing end. When the junction of these two metals is heated or cooled, a voltage is produced that varies with the temperature. Correlation tables enable an exact determination of the temperature from the measured voltage.
Along with the different types of thermocouple wires there are also different grades: “Standard Limits of Error” and “Special Limits of Error.”

An RTD is one of the most accurate temperature sensing devices available. Unlike a thermocouple that utilizes two wires of differing materials, most RTDs utilize a wire that is made from a single pure element whose resistance at various temperatures has been documented and whose resistance is predictable as temperature changes. Commonly used resistance materials include platinum (most popular and accurate), nickel, and copper.
